The Joy of Laziness: How to Slow Down and Live Longer http://howtocreateyourfuture.com/the-joy-of-laziness-how-to-slow-down-and-live-longer/ http://howtocreateyourfuture.com/the-joy-of-laziness-how-to-slow-down-and-live-longer/#comments Wed, 19 Dec 2012 22:18:36 +0000 http://howtocreateyourfuture.com/?p=1685 Continue reading ]]>

It is the news that all sloths have been waiting for. Scientists in Germany have found that too much exercise is bad for you and that doing less could lengthen your life.

In a new book called The Joy of Laziness: How to slow down and live longer, Dr Peter Axt, retired professor of health science at Fulda University near Frankfurt, and his daughter, Dr Michaela Axt-Gadermann, a GP, say that everybody has a limited amount of “life energy” and that the speed with which it is consumed determines their life span.

They argue that high-energy activities, such as pounding the treadmill at the gym, accelerates the ageing process and makes the body more susceptible to illness.

“A more relaxed way of life is important for your health,” said Dr Axt-Gadermann. “If you lead a stressful life and exercise excessively, your body produces hormones which lead to high blood pressure and can damage your heart and arteries.”

The book also says that laziness is good for the brain. It says that exercise and stress can cause the body to produce the hormone cortisol, which can damage cells in the brain and lead to memory loss and premature senility.

To illustrate the theory that laziness equals longevity, The Joy of Laziness also suggests that early risers are more prone to stress and that late sleepers live longer because they conserve their energy. “People who would rather laze in a hammock instead of running a marathon, or who take a nap instead of playing squash, have a better chance of living into old age.”

Dr Axt and his daughter advise readers that gentle walking, their own preferred form of exercise, is sufficient to keep people in shape if combined with a sensible diet that is low in carbohydrates and high in protein.

“We try to put our own ideas into practice but this does not mean that we do nothing all day,” said Dr Axt-Gadermann. “Laziness should not be to the extreme and work is an important part of life, but recreation and relaxation should not be underestimated.”

8 Secrets to a Long and Happy Life http://howtocreateyourfuture.com/8-secrets-to-a-long-and-happy-life/ Thu, 27 Sep 2012 17:03:56 +0000 http://howtocreateyourfuture.com/?p=1555 Continue reading ]]>

It’s no secret that the Mediterranean diet can help us achieve longevity, but the overall lifestyles of the region’s populace shouldn’t escape our attention.

Tucked away in the Aegean Sea is a small, rocky island called Ikaria, where residents on average reach the age of 90. Here are a few island secrets of longevity researchers have picked up after years of studying the dreamy getaway.

1. Drink Herbal Tea

The Ikarians love it. Many teas found on the island are mildly diuretic and help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of dementia. A few diuretic herbs are yarrow, dandelion, stinging nettle, and green tea. The health benefits of green tea are amazing, so this may be your first choice.

2. Take a Nap

Like typical islanders, Ikarians don’t bother getting up—or opening up shop—earlier than they feel like it. Something as simple as an afternoon siesta can reduce your risk of cardiovascular problems including heart attack, and it can help you feel more energized and well-rested in the afternoon.

3. Eat fresh Vegetables

Ikaria boasts over 150 varieties of greens. Much of what the islanders eat, in fact, they grow themselves. As with the typical Mediterranean diet, this means very little meat and sugar and lots of vegetables, beans, and antioxidant-rich extra virgin olive oil.

4. Drink Goat’s Milk

Unlike cow’s milk, goat’s milk is easier to digest and contains tryptophan, an amino acid that reduces stress. Goat cheese also contains vitamin D, although there’s plenty of that from the sunshine on this dreamy island.

5. Walk it Off

When you live in a mountainous region like Ikaria, you walk—uphill—a lot. Besides, the islanders are rarely in a hurry to meet anyone, so when they agree to catch up over tea, they take a long, leisurely stroll to do so.

6. Dip into a Hot Spring

Radium is a nasty word in America, but the Ikarians have sworn by radium-rich hot springs since the 4th century. Reduction in joint pain, stress, and skin irritation are often cited as benefits.

7. Just Dance

Rather than chugging flavorless beer and going broke paying for sugar-laden mix drinks, Ikarians drink and eat in moderation, focusing on letting go of (what few) cares they have and simply enjoying each other’s company. This leads us to their final piece of advice…
The Ageless Secrets

8. Relax

Stress can greatly increase your risk of numerous diseases as well as dangerous behavior. Ask Ikarians what time it is. They probably won’t know—or care. It’s difficult to approach most work days with an Ikarian attitude, but learning basic stress reduction techniques can add years to your life. These can include exercise, meditation, yoga, tapping, or taking a fifteen-minute break to drink a sip of herbal tea.

A British band and a group of scientists have made the most relaxing tune in the history of man, an MP3 of which is linked at the bottom of this article.

Sound therapists and Manchester band Marconi Union compiled the song. Scientists played it to 40 women and found it to be more effective at helping them relax than songs by Enya, Mozart and Coldplay.

Weightless works by using specific rhythms, tones, frequencies and intervals to relax the listener. A continuous rhythm of 60 BPM causes the brainwaves and heart rate to synchronise with the rhythm: a process known as ‘entrainment’.

Low underlying bass tones relax the listener and a low whooshing sound with a trance-like quality takes the listener into an even deeper state of calm.

Top 10 Most Relaxing Songs

Dr David Lewis, one of the UK’s leading stress specialists said: “‘Weightless’ induced the greatest relaxation – higher than any of the other music tested. Brain imaging studies have shown that music works at a very deep level within the brain, stimulating not only those regions responsible for processing sound but also ones associated with emotions.”

The study – commissioned by bubble bath and shower gel firm Radox Spa – found the song was even more relaxing than a massage, walk or cup of tea. So relaxing is the tune, apparently, that people are being Rex advised against listening to it while driving.

The top 10 most relaxing tunes were: 1. Marconi Union – Weightless 2. Airstream – Electra 3. DJ Shah – Mellomaniac (Chill Out Mix) 4. Enya – Watermark 5. Coldplay – Strawberry Swing 6. Barcelona – Please Don’t Go 7. All Saints – Pure Shores 8. AdelevSomeone Like You 9. Mozart – Canzonetta Sull’aria 10. Cafe Del Mar – We Can Fly
